Additional games

To provide gambling, a licence from the Danish Gambling Authority is required if the game meets all of the three following conditions:

  • The participants must pay a stake (money or similar of a monetary value)
  • The participants have a chance of winning (all kinds of prizes of a monetary value)
  • The gambling activity has an element of chance

If one of the conditions is not met, the game can be provided without a licence.

Examples of games that can be provided without a licence

  • Games without a stake with the chance of winning a prize
  • Games with a stake without the chance of winning a prize
  • Games with a stake and a prize where there is no element of chance e.g. chess, quiz, bridge with duplicated cards, sport competitions, video games etc.

Exceptions from the licence requirement

Although all three conditions are met, some games can still be provided without a licence from the Danish Gambling Authority. The licence requirement does not apply to:

  • Land-based tournament backgammon
  • Bank premium bond accounts
  • Premium bonds
  • Betting on the future value of financial assets, or
  • Gambling for small amounts of money in private homes

No licence requirement applies to these types of games because they are directly exempted in the law.

If betting on the future value of financial assets is not covered by the financial legislation, note that it may be covered by the Danish Act on Gambling.
