Offers, bonuses and playthrough requirements: Understanding gambling operators’ terms and conditions

When you play online, you may come across terms such as bonus and playthrough requirements. Here you can learn more about what they mean.

Bonus

A bonus is also referred to as a “sales promotion”.

Sales promotions include all initiatives offered by a gambling operator with a commercial purpose, regardless of whether a separate payment is required for the offer.

Examples of sales promotions:

  • Bonus offers
  • Free bets / Free spins
  • Competitions
  • Draws
  • Daily/weekly/monthly offers (e.g. “World Cup offer”)
  • Price reductions (e.g. spins at half price)
  • Favourable odds for selected players

When a gambling operator markets a bonus (promotional measure), all terms and conditions must be presented clearly and prominently in direct connection with the offer.

The terms must be presented in a way that is clear and understandable to the consumer, ensuring that the player knows exactly what they are accepting when receiving the bonus.

Playthrough requirements

Bonus offers often come with a playthrough requirement. This means that you must wager the amount you received as a bonus a certain number of times before you can withdraw any money. Playthrough requirements may apply to both deposits and bonuses.

Playthrough requirement on the bonus

If you deposit DKK 100 into a gambling account and receive a DKK 100 bonus with a playthrough requirement of 10 times the bonus, you must wager
100 DKK × 10 = 1,000 DKK
on the gambling site before you can withdraw any winnings earned through your bonus.

Playthrough requirement on both deposit and bonus

If the playthrough requirement applies to both the deposit and the bonus, you must wager
(100 DKK + 100 DKK) × 10 = 2,000 DKK
before you can withdraw any winnings earned through your bonus.

Rules on playthrough requirements

A playthrough requirement may not exceed 10 times, according to gambling legislation.

If you win a prize while using a bonus, the prize may not be subject to a wagering requirement under Danish gambling legislation.

All games that can be used to meet the wagering requirement must contribute 100 percent. A game cannot contribute, for example, only 50 percent.

It is therefore important to pay attention to all terms and conditions attached to a bonus offer or other promotional measures.

You should also be aware that if a promotional measure requires a deposit, the promotional measure must have the same value as the deposit.
