Helpful advice for people who gamble

For most people, gambling is a form of entertainment, but in some cases it can get out of control and lead to negative consequences. This is why Denmark has rules designed to protect players and prevent gambling from becoming harmful.

What you can do to stay in control of your gambling

Responsible gambling rules apply to operators — but there are also steps you can take yourself to keep your gambling under control and prevent it from becoming a source of worry or harm.

The Danish Gambling Authority has developed the following advice to help you stay in control

What you can expect from gambling operators

Gambling operators must, for example, ensure that children and young people under the age of 18 cannot access gambling. This does not apply to monopoly lotteries, where the age limit is 16, or to charitable lotteries.

When you gamble, you may come across the term Responsible Gambling. This refers to specific rules that operators must follow to protect you while you play.

For many types of gambling, this includes:

  • You must set a limit on how much you can deposit into your gambling account (a deposit limit).
  • You can exclude yourself temporarily from the operator’s games (self‑exclusion) or close your account and withdraw your remaining funds.
  • You must be able to view your gambling history (stakes and winnings) for at least the past 90 days.

The purpose of responsible gambling rules is to help prevent gambling-related problems. Operators are therefore also required to:

  • Provide information about where you can get help if you experience gambling problems.
  • Monitor your gambling behaviour and pay attention to any changes.
  • Respond if they see signs of potential problems — for example by contacting you to discuss your spending or time spent gambling.

You may therefore experience being contacted by the operator to ensure that your gambling remains under control.

Rules only work if they are followed, which is why the Danish Gambling Authority supervises operators to ensure they meet their obligations.

If you want to be certain that you are gambling with an operator supervised by the Danish Gambling Authority, look for the Authority’s label
